Review #4: The Hunger Games

It left me hungry.. for more games.

Let me start by saying that this movie is NOT perfect. It’s pretty damn good I will admit and the story is quite interesting but is it worthy of oscars? No. Is it better than Twilight? Most definately. Is it better than Harry Potter? No. Not in the slightest. So here’s my standpoint on this movie: better than Twilight but worse than Harry Potter.

The story is about this girl named … Katniss Everdeen … ok ok I got to stop for a minute and ask … WHAT IS UP WITH THE NAMES IN THIS MOVIE?? I know that this is supposed to represent the future and there’s probably aliens and stuff but seriously? Katniss? Primrose? Peeta? WTH? And if that weren’t enough here’s all of the other names that are crazy that are mentioned in the movie: Katniss (Jennifer Laurence), Primrose (Willow Shields), Peeta (Josh Hutcherson), Haymitch (Woody Harrelson), Effie (Elizabeth Banks), Cinna (Lenny Kravitz), Seneca (Wes Bently), Cato (Alexander Ludwig), Clove (Isabelle Fuhrman), Coriolanus (Donald Sutherland)… etc. There’s only one name I can remember that is normal: Gale (Liam Hemsworth). It’s just something that bothered me.. ok back to my review:

The story is about this girl named Katniss Everdeen from district 12 who volunteers for the Hunger Games after her sister Primrose is selected and takes her place. Apparently the games are a ritual every year that the evil “capitol” enacts because the other 12 districts revolted against the capitol or something. I think it is explained that if you do something bad your name is put in again into the bowl of selection for the games… Gale said during the movie he was in there 42 times so I suppose getting into trouble is easy around there. Every year 2 people from each district (one male and one female) are chosen to represent their district and receive glory for their district by killing everyone else in the hunger games making the total 24 tributes in all. Yep.. it’s a fight to the death here. So the two chosen people from district 12 are Katniss and Peeta. They are sent to the capitol to be trained for the hunger games as well as earn sponsorships to survive in the hunger games. Their mentor, Haymitch, a previous winner of the hunger games instructs the two of them on how to survive and win the hunger games. While this is going on, Cinna, Katniss’ and Peeta’s stylist gives them advice as well. When the time of the games comes it is an all out blood bath. About 1/3 or more of the tributes are killed while trying to grab supplies in the first 10 minutes of the hunger games. Katniss decides to not get a weapon, but decides to get a health bag and runs into the forest for survival. She moves not that often and sleeps in the trees at night to not be detected. Peeta has joined an alliance of tributes from other districts (about 5 of them) to kill all that stand in their way. The group eventually finds Katniss and corners her when she gets up a tree. Katniss then drops deadly wasps on them and one of the girls in the group is killed. At this point Katniss befriends one of the tributes, Rue, and the two of them try to watch out for one another. Rue is eventually captured and killed by the alliance of tributes and Katniss mourns her death. The Alliance then grabs all of the supplies and puts them in the center of the starting area with mines placed all around it. Katniss destroys the pile and pisses off the leader of the Alliance by killing one of the group. The announcers of the hunger games then say that if 2 people are from the same district and are the last 2 alive they can both win. It is at this point that Peeta and Katniss join forces to take down the remaining tributes. They eventually succeed and win together after the announcers try to screw them both over at the end. The two of them are given a prize or something and sent back to district 12. The movie ends with the President of the Hunger games being disappointed that there were 2 winners of the hunger games.

There are a few things wrong with this movie that I must point out (besides the names). First thing is that the movie seems to be repetitive during the middle/end. There are tons of scenes with Kadniss being out in the forest, hiding, being out in the forest, hiding, etc. There is not much of Peeta that we are able to see throughout the movie and that really is disappointing considering that he is the other member of district 12 that gets chosen. The main story is all about Kadniss. While that is not all bad it just seems like the other characters are forgotten at times.  The story should let us see what is going on with all of the tributes as well.

The only other thing that I can say that needs improvement is … the costumes. Yeah the costumes.. Until you see the movie you cannot understand what I mean here. The people from the districts are not what I am referring to, it is the people that reside within the capitol. It seriously looks like everyone was dressed by Lady Gaga and Marylin Manson at the same time. I can see what they were going for in terms of separation of class but I feel that they were taking it a bit too far.

The good news is that this movie is really exciting and action packed. Also I realize that this movie had to be toned down for the violence and I am glad they did that. I did not feel it was right to see the utter gut ripping of little kids. The plot line is good as well but I really don’t see how they can continue from here even though there are two more movies on the way. Hopefully they will both be better than this movie.

Overall The Hunger Games is a great movie to watch even though it gets repetitive in the middle/end. Some aspecs of the movie don’t work but then again this movie is action packed, has a good plot, and contains a great cast.

IMDB Score: 7.9

My Score: 8.3
